The 60-mile trek from Woodstock to Chicago takes a bit more than an hour. The grand opening of our second location in Lake in the Hills, IL, shaved a couple miles off the commute and gave us another place from which to process firewood and mulch deliveries. Most wood on Earth is terrible for kindling because fresh or natural wood is too moist. To combat this, most companies who sell firewood in-bulk resort to seasoning, a drying process that can take months. Seasoning is little more than leaving wood in a dry, well-ventilated area, but a lot of moisture may persist after a couple months of seasoning, which is why using a kiln is more effective.
Our kiln-dried hardwood is the best firewood to burn because it’s the driest and the densest. Its moisture levels rest below 20%, while seasoning virtually never achieves this level of dryness. Also, we sell some of the densest hardwood species available, including oak and hickory.
For only two days, our kilns remove moisture, mold and insects from our hardwood logs, after which each log can be part of a crackling fire.

Our firewood and mulch order sizes accommodate most customers. The firewood order options include ¼ face cord (4’x2’), ½ face cord (4’x4’) and 1 face cord (4’x8’). As for mulch, you can order by the cubic yard.

The short answer to this question is you get what you pay for. Other firewood sellers can undercut our prices because they don’t put extra effort into the firewood production process like we do. We dry our wood in massive kilns to purify it and reduce its moisture below 20% for the easiest, hottest and cleanest burns possible. So, while you may save money on that lesser firewood, you will pay for it in subpar burns and a lot of dirty smoke in your eyes! Kiln-dried firewood prevents these problems for a better fire burning experience!
Hardwood species make the best firewood because they are denser and contain less sap than their softwood counterparts. These properties make hardwood burn hotter, longer and with fewer sparks than softwood. At Lumberjacks, we only sell the hottest and cleanest burning hardwood species, including oak, hickory, cherry and birch.
There are many best practices to follow for proper firewood storage. The most important steps are to keep the firewood off the ground and allow plenty of space around your stack for airflow. Also be sure to stack the wood in a single row with space between the pieces for air to flow through them.
