Lake Forest can’t maintain its beauty without a firm commitment to nature and wildlife. Residents maintain and enjoy a stellar lakefront park. On rainy days, one might enjoy a visit to the Wildlife Discovery Center’s indoor exhibits. Businesses and homes depend on us for mulch each spring and firewood each fall.
We weren’t sure how many homeowners we could reach from our yard in Woodstock when we opened in 1993. Among other major towns across Chicagoland, Lake Forest is 40 miles away, but we’ve still been able to keep stashes of firewood full and fortify lawns with mulch.
Opening a second location in Lake in the Hills made delivering to places as far from us as Lake Forest much easier. With two yards from which to process and prepare orders, we may be able to deliver an order the same day of a customer’s request.
Partly, Lake Forest’s beauty is our responsibility! We’re proud to provide the best firewood and mulch to such a sweet town.
Our firewood owes its incredible effectiveness to two major factors: dryness and density. Other retailers who seek to sell as much firewood as possible might rely on “seasoning,” a process during which wood rests in a dry place for several months. Seasoning doesn’t dry wood as well as kiln-drying, and kiln-drying takes only 48 hours!
Furthermore, while other vendors might use many types of wood to make firewood, we use only hardwood, which is much denser than softwood. Wood’s density informs how hot a fire can be and how long a fire can burn. Hardwood species include oak, birch and hickory, though we recommend oak to make the longest and hottest fires.
As effective as kiln-dried firewood is for heating a home, there’s no reason you can’t cook with it, too. Preparing our cooking wood as we prepare our other firewood, we chop the former into pieces small enough for pizza ovens. Our cooking wood yields long, stable fires to provide optimal control over doneness.
The driest wood makes for fires that’re easy to light and maintain, but a log’s dryness also reduces the creosote and smoke a fire produces. If you’re cooking something over a fire, that’s all the more reason to avoid nasty byproducts. Furthermore, our cooking wood is as sterile as our firewood, containing no bugs, mold or fungus. We’ve been happy to provide our pristine cooking wood to restaurants and residences across Chicagoland.
In terms of landscaping, city workers and residents make a good team. They know good mulch when they see it. For the healthiest lawns, residents know they have to get only the purest mulch from vendors like us.
You might be able to find the cheapest options at the hardware store, but buying mulch by the bag is always less cost-effective than buying mulch by the cubic yard. Because of how many bags you’ll have to buy, you may as well purchase better mulch in greater quantities. Our mulch is better because it doesn’t contain any chemicals that sterilize soil and damage plants. 100% organic mulch is best for long-term care, prioritizing plant defense as well as plant nutrition.

We sell plenty of firewood in the fall and plenty of mulch in the spring. With our hardwood, we offer a popular firewood blend of hickory, birch, cherry and oak, while our flavors of mulch are chocolate, red, premium bark and premium hardwood. Red works best with mild color palettes, but our mulch can complement any home.
Also, if you’re preparing for a barbecue, you might enjoy our cooking wood. Unlike firewood, cooking wood is in pieces small enough to fit in smokers, grills, and outdoor pizza ovens. Our cooking wood can bring smoky notes to new dishes, so we hope you’ll check it out.
For most residents who heat their homes with firewood, our sizes work pretty well: ¼ face cord (4’x2’), ½ face cord (4’x4’) and 1 face cord (4’x8’). Businesses or homes that depend almost entirely on firewood for heat might benefit from multiple face cords, but occasional use requires no more than a face cord.
We sell mulch by the cubic yard. Again, the same amount of mulch is more expensive in bags than it is in cubic yards, so we encourage you to use our calculator to discern how much you need and put in an order for our organic hardwood mulch.
