Below, you’ll find answers to these questions about our premium hardwood mulch:
The cost of mulch depends on which type of mulch you’re getting and how much. You can choose from four types of mulch: premium hardwood, premium bark, chocolate mulch and red mulch. Please contact us for an accurate cost estimate.
How does mulch help plants?
Mulch retains moisture in the soil and keeps plant roots cool, which is especially useful during the hot summer months. Thoroughly covering your ground in mulch can also reduce or block weeds and prevent frost heaving in the winter. Additional benefits include reducing soil erosion and acting as a visible marker to limit plant damage by yard equipment. Of course, the uniform mulch color in your outdoor space is aesthetically pleasing, too.
How long does mulch last?
Organic mulch can last as long as six years, although you’ll need to continue topping it off each season. However, many factors can cause the mulch to last less time. For example, heavy rains and strong winds can cause mulch to wash or blow away. Certain environments can increase the rate of decomposition, too.
What should I not mulch?
You should avoid mulching directly at the base of trees and shrubs, as this can attract unwanted pests. Mulching too close can also cause rot or decay, which can kill your beautiful plants. Instead, leave at least a few inches empty around the base of shrubs and trees. The same goes for mulching around your home. Leaving a few inches open against your home’s exterior can help decrease the risks of attracting bugs like ants, beetles or termites.
Can you mulch right after it rains?
That depends. You shouldn’t mulch after a heavy rainstorm when the soil is waterlogged, as this can potentially lead to problems. However, directly following light rainfall is the perfect time to lay down your mulch! This ensures there’s moisture in the soil for the mulch to preserve!
Why should I mulch my vegetable garden?
There are many reasons to get mulch delivered for use in your vegetable garden. Mulch keeps your vegetables healthier and growing stronger by suppressing weed growth, reducing fertilizer leaching, preserving soil moisture and keeping the soil cool.
How often should I replace mulch?
Although organic mulch can last several years, we generally recommend replacing your mulch every one to two years. However, this doesn’t necessarily mean you need to remove the old mulch before laying down new. If you choose premium organic mulch like we sell at Lumberjacks, you can simply top off your mulch instead.
How much mulch do I need?
The amount of mulch needed depends on your specific project. To determine how much mulch you need, check out our handy mulch calculator.
What’s the difference between organic and inorganic mulch?
Organic mulch is made from natural ingredients like hardwoods, which can decompose to feed the soil. On the other hand, inorganic mulch is made from unnatural ingredients like plastics or metals, which don’t decompose.
Why is organic mulch better than inorganic mulch?
Unlike inorganic mulch, organic mulch feeds the soil. This means organic mulch is good for your plants – not just beautiful. On the other hand, inorganic mulch could contain harmful chemicals or materials that are bad for your plants. Plus, they don’t provide nutritional value to your plants, trees or flowers.
